We use the term 'local' here simply to refer to the origins of the dj's
listed. Unlike most 'local' sections, OUR section contains NO wack
local radio dweebs or suburban wanna-be's. Our guys here are REAL
street dj's (or that's how they started), and these mixes catch them in
their 'salad' days. They are Apollo Discoveries, and easily the equal
of the 'bigtime' dj's, or else they wouldn't BE in our catalog. If you
order titles from us and have NOT tried out any of the mixes in this
section, you're missing out on some of the best stuff we offer. They're
here for a reason: the perfect combination of 'ghetto-style' and
refinement/sophistication....you know, SKILLS!!!! Let's get to work
here:
And because they never got their shit together to do what the incredible
dj's in this section have done (meaning: go down in history by submitting
tapes to the Best Mixtape Catalog On Earth), we'll have to give a really
tiny shoutout (and a "Damn, Man! Bumped your head or WHAT!") to the following
mega-talents who are lost to the pages of history:
The City Crew: probably the OLDEST, were-there-FIRST, crew in the BeeLo.
Funniest use of Captain Sky's "Supersperm" i ever heard! Already the Elder
Statesmen even beFORE the dawn of hiphop, these guys told us stories. Man,
what stories! Toronto took them away from us by the mid-80's.
DJ Maniac: the original Flava Flav, LONG before Public Enemy. Rocked THREE
turntables when it was considered almost a FREAKISH thing to do. Yeah, well,
he may have rocked 3 tables, but the end result didn't make a LICK of sense!
But manoman, did we have a good time with that guy!
DJ Wolf D: probably the BADDEST motherfucker to ever attack two tables and a
dancefloor full of stone cold freaks. Cocky, yes! Skills, HELL yes! Still the
BEST version of Captain Rock's "Return of Captain Rock" with just two turntables
and an 'i can do anything' attitude that i've ever witnessed. DAMN, i'm pissed
that i don't have any vintage mixes of his from 1982-1985!
DJ J.R.: ego? O...my...god, yes. Attitude? Well, nah, not really. A VERY nice
guy whom we found easy to get along with. Worked DEEP in the ghetto. I still
remember the parties in the bombed out, condemned tavern at Genesee and Fox.
Could wipe the floor with most of the dj's in the circuit, and was sophisticated
enough to hold an older crowd, as well. First dj i ever heard who actually
rocked SLOW jams and radio jams, using the hardcore cutting and quickmixing
techniques of hiphop, but subtle and not 'show-offy'. And with the real street
records in his hands? Blistering! This guy could mix ANYthing.
And to my Latin Soul Brothers: DJ Jesse, Steve-o Mendez, the missing-in-action
DJ Hi-Tech, all i can say is: you shoulda been in this room. I
hope your lives are filled with the happiness you gave us when you mixed, or even
even when you just TALKED about the music you loved. The Light shined out of
your eyes and heart, and that ain't no religious reference, capice?
We shed no tears....cuz so many of the original Apollo Homeboys DID in fact lay
down the proof of their talents AS IT HAPPENED (no retro mixes here, these are
mixes provided within a week of their creation, during 1983-1989), i'm about to
present to the world one HELLIFIED list of unsung worldclass dj's. This is ONE
section of the catalog where you should not look for "namebrands", look INSTEAD
at the track listings!
-
mixL.01) Cold City Crew #1 (7/85)
(1cd only, no cassette)
Could there possibly be a greater crew of unsung dj heroes on EARTH to top the
Cold City Crew? Alan Collins and younger brother Brian "Kid Cold" Collins used
just two turntables and a microphone and RE-DEFINED what could be done with a
simple mixtape, turning an elite selection of breakbeats and full jams into an
actual musical journey. I've seen these phrases, 'musical journey' and 'two
turntables and a microphone', become almost commonplace....used to hype utter
b-grade bullshit masquerading as a 'mix', but nowhere have these overused
phrases applied MORE than to these two Masters of the Mix from the "Fruit Belt"
of Buffalo's lower east side. I am positively thrilled to present these first
three selections to a worldwide audience. You know what to do, and when looking
at the track selections, consider this to be the law: the sum is much GREATER
than the parts (track listings are dry, and can't convey what they get transformed
INTO when you actually HEAR what "the triple C's" do with these records).

Lorna on Silver Blue 05048, 8/84. All i remember is that the Silver Blue label
was distributed by Columbia and numbered within Columbia's then-numbering system.
What's the DEAL with this label???)

mixL.02) Cold City Crew #2 (11/85)
(2cd only, no cassette)
If you're gonna start somewhere, start with THIS one. How can i control the
hyperbole....this is simply one of the greatest mixes of ALL TIME. A pair of
dj's at the peak of their inventiveness, bursting with energy and comin' atcha
from all angles of surprise and delight. This is a celebration of the ghetto dj
at the top of his game, creating ART. There. I said it. Everything that the Latin
Rascals ARE but without the use of splicers and samplers: this is just a whole lot
of....fuck, again with the cliches but they WEREN'T cliches at one time....skills
and fingers working to the bone.

-
mixL.03) Cold City Crew #3: The Return of the Macks (2/88)
(2cd only, no cassette)
This was the first of their many 'returns'. There were jail sentences, REALLY
embarassing appearances on Montel (which i HAVE on tape, btw...Brian...you
are SO busted, man! LOL! Send me some of those videos, DAWG!!) but really...
who cares! What dropped was a celebratory egotrip of cutting, scratching,
transforming and turntable trix ONLY the Kid could do. Kid Cold getting SO
good by then that older brother Alan could call out a world-reknowned dj's name,
and the Kid could imitate his cuts with perfection. Inbetween CCC #2 and THIS
tape, B-Boy had signed the Cold City Crew into a disastrous relationship,
releasing ONE 12" and never getting to the full album the crew had produced. We
HAVE the best trax from that unreleased album, it'll be in the Archives section
or write me offline if you're impatient. In the meantime: check out Two Baaad
Mutherfuckers so beyond their peers it's pathetic! Side One by Kid Cold, Side
Two by Alan Cold. This ain't just a mix, this is called a goddam SHOW!
Jams include:
- > Beats & Cutting intro
- > J.J. Fadd: Supersonic (Dream Team)

- > MC Shy D: Gotta Be Tough

-
mixL.04) Fresh City Crew #1 (Fall, 1986)
(2cd only, no cassette)
Never had the flamboyance of the "star" crews. Never tooted their own
horns like the "sucker" crews. But god DAMN, could this little guy MIX!
If there was a crew, i never saw it, except for this soft-spoken Southern
gentleman named "Jimmy" and whoever he brought in with him when he shopped.
Jimmy a/k/a DJ Spider took records that'll floor ya (LOOK at the track
listings for these tapes!) and weaved them inna street style of perfect blends
and cuts. No matter WHERE you are, and no matter WHERE you're reading this,
if you down, you down. For the REAL b-boys and b-girls.

mixL.05) Fresh City Crew #2 (Fall, 1987)
(1cd, or 90m. (a) cassette w/bonus trax)
One year later. One year more skillful. And he disappeared! Can
you dig this? If you're old enough to remember these jams, you're
legit. My apologies if you're spending your money on diapers. No one
told life would be better once you traded in your two turntables for
two rugrats. So put down the safety pins, throw the kids in the
microwave (make sure you poke holes in them with a fork so they don't
BLOW UP when you cook 'em).....and grab a hold of THIS:
Jams include:
- > Chic: Good Times (indicating a MAJOR cut-a-thon a-borning!)
- > DJ Jazzy Jeff: A Touch of Jazz (Jive)
- > Eric B: I Ain't No Joke (FAB)

-
mixL.06) Michael Dailor: The BOMB #1
(2cd only, no cassette)
I don't even know where to BEGIN with the next two mixes.
Way back in the mid-80's,
this...little...impish...so-white-he-may-as-well-be-ALBINO guy dropped
a collection of his mixes he'd created in his hometown of Rochester, NY.
What i HEARD is that he had a little "Batcave". And he'd disappear
in his hole for a week. Crank out these mini-mixes old school style
with a razor and a piece of marble and two turntables. And come up all
STANKY and STUBBLY with a reel in his hand. The next two
selections are among the greatest mixes EVER MADE. They are not like
ANYTHING i've ever heard before or since. I don't care WHAT you think
a mixtape can be. THESE next two tapes bust every hymen, Daddy-O! If
you're JADED and think you heard it ALL, you're READY for Mike Dailor.
The "Original Gene Splicer" and the Master of the Surprise. I've heard
them ALL and absolutely NO ONE's mixes compares to Dailor's.
Latin Rascals? Double D & Steinski? The DMC dj-service plates (a UK
subscription-only series of vinyl megamixes whose best period was
mid-late 80's)? Nope: MD got em beat! All i can do is list the concept.
When you buy it, you'll hear the execution. Brilliant: as if written out
first as a script. With bedtracks, cuts and drop-ins, surprises & audio
snippets from all sorts of media. Nuff said. As we go a little something
like THIS (warning! His tapes are a BITCH to decipher/explain/break down
into a textual online format. So much flying at you from all directions
you can sneeze and miss stuff!):

mixL.10) DJ: Neil Harris 2
(90m. (a) cassette-only for now, but do-able on cd if you want: just ask)
Continuing his eclectic ways, this is basically a new wave dance/house
dance "flip-flop" mix. Weaving back and forth between the two styles.
I've got a few question marks on some of the titles (pretty much a first
for me, granted), and hopefully Neil will write in with the missing info.
It's a great, downtempo, subtle blended mix of some great records, easily
good enough to make the AJ cut!
Jams include:
- > Pet Shop Boys: Being Boring
- > ???-???
- > Yaz: Situation
- > ???-??? ("you can feel the difference")
- > Depeche Mode: Sea of Sin
- > ???-??? ("send him to the cemetery")

mixL.12) The Homeboys b/w "D.C." aka: DJ Darius (Summer, 1985)
(2cd only, no cassette)
Now don't laugh, cuz this brings us full circle back to the ORIGINAL
CONCEPT of this room. Complete UNKNOWNS who rocked the house! That's what
i've tried to assemble here, and i think this room is positively BEAMING
with goodstuff, moreso than the "name" brands you may lean towards. The
way you might eat at McDonald's while on the road instead of trying the
local diner where all the really GOOD eatin' is, dig? I can't tell you one
damn thing about the guys who did Side A, other than they were quiet and
shopped at Apollo and did their homework, if you know what i mean!
Just two young guys with skills, lost to history! And left one HOT fucking tape as
their legacy. Then on Side B, we got ole' Alan Williams good buddy, Darius,
bringing us his pure NYC-style mixing and blending. He was the main dj on
campus when Me And The Crew FIRST started going to those amazing all-night
dance parties. I'm STILL hungover from drinking all that VooDoo with the guys
(Vodka and Mountain Dew. Geddit? "Voo-Dew"!). I just recently unearthed this
from the vaults: it's never been offered before. I'm glad it's got a home
online. Just CHECK this pure underground b-boy track listing. And yes, they
can MIX, scratch and cut! Duh.
Jams include:
- > Beats Intro & Cuts
- > Marley Marl: Marley Marl Scratch (Nia)
- > Davy D: The DMX Will Rock (Tuff City, 5/85)
- > Davy D: One for the Treble (Tuff City/Columbia, 1/84)
- > 2 Live Crew: Two Live (a/k/a "Beatbox")
- > Trinere: All Night (JamPacked/MSI)
- > The Future: Nuclear Holocaust (GREAT GREAT GREAT MIX OF THIS!!!)
- > Newcleus: Computer Age (Push the Button) (Sunnyview)
- > Hashim: Al Naafiysh (It's Time) (Cutting 200, 11/83)
